“Blessed are the poor in spirit,
for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.” Matthew 5:3
Those who are poor lack something material and immaterial. In the Old Testament “poor” were those who are without material possessions and those who have confidence with God. Jesus is telling us that we can’t be reliant on material wealth and possessions or we will lose our reliance on God.
Are we truly happy when we acquire material things? Maybe we are initially but often times in the long run we can’t maintain that happiness. So we end up going out and buying more and more material items to achieve that happiness. Material items become a drug to us. The more we get, the more we want to get when the initial high of that moment wears off.
Most of us can spot truly happy people right away. They are the people that we associate ourselves with when we have nothing to gain for ourselves. Who are the truly happy people in our lives? Are we truly happy ourselves or do we find that there is a hole within us that can’t seem to be filled by wealth and possessions? No matter how much we try to.
